The 3 Congo lowland gorilla trek offers a lifetime opportunity for you to immerse yourself into the African jungles to enjoy up close and personal with the Eastern lowland gorillas. The lowland (Grauer’s) gorilla trekking will be done in the Kahuzi-Biega National Park (Parc National de Kahuzi-Biega), a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Kahuzi-Biega is set west of Bukavu, Southern province of Kivu –D.R. Congo. This park derives its name from the 2 extinct volcanoes –Kahuzi and Biega, and it is dominated by a lush tropical forest. This park covers 6000sq.km of land area, and grauer’s gorilla families to track include Nganwa, Chimanuka, Mpungwe, Mugaruka and Bonnani.

In addition to the Grauer’s gorillas, Kahuzi-Biega N. Park also holds other mammals including the bush buffaloes, bush elephants, bongo, Alexander’s bush squirrel, Eastern needle-clawed galagos and more. Birds of Kahuzi-Biega N/Park include African kingfishers, Shelley’s crimson wing, Rwenzori batis, Grauer’s broadbills, Rockefellers, Congo peafowl, yellow crested helmet-shrike, Rwenzori turacos, the trogon birds, Sunbirds to mention but a few.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Kigali to Bukavu town, gate-way to Kahuzi-Biega national park

Enjoy a hefty breakfast in the morning and after, set off from Kigali to Bukavu via Butare-Nyungwe Forest route. It will be a long day journey but comes with multiple stopover visits to cultural and historical sites in Butare. From Butare, you will drive to Kamembe town and cross through Rusizi border to Bukavu town to check in at the pre-booked accommodation.

Day 2: Lowland Gorilla Trekking in Kahuzi-Biega National Park

Following your sumptuous breakfast, briefing about Grauer’s lowland gorilla trekking regulations. Kahuzi-Biega N/Park official will also allocate gorilla families and park guides during the briefing session. By 8:00am, you will embark on an actual search for the Eastern lowland gorillas in their natural habitat. After the long hours of navigating through the forest and finally, you come across a family of these rare species, you will be guaranteed of one hour to enjoy face-to-face and also to take as many photos as possible. After, begin trekking back to the lodge or hotel around Bukavu.

Day 3: Departure back to Kigali

Your driver guide will be transferring you from Bukavu to Kigali. As you connect to Kigali, have great time enjoying the spectacular countryside of Congo and Rwanda. At Kigali, you may remain at the hotel or depart back home from Kigali airport. This brings to an end the 3 days lowland gorilla trek in Congo starting from Kigali.
