Virunga Mountains are referred to as mountain ranges located in the three East African countries of Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Rwanda. These ranges involve the volcano mountains that are scattered in the eastern region of Africa in Congo, Uganda, and Rwanda. These Virunga mountain ranges stretch from Lake Edward in Uganda to Lake Kivu in Congo. These mountain ranges include Sabyinyo, Gahinga, Muhabura, Bisoke, Karisimbi, Mikeno, Nyiragongo, and Nyamuragira mountains. As the name suggests in the local languages “Virunga” means volcanoes, all the mountains that make up these Virunga mountain ranges are dormant volcanic mountains.
Mount Sabyinyo
Standing at an altitude of about 3,669 meters above sea level, Mount Sabyinyo is the oldest volcano in the Virunga mountain ranges. It is located on the borders of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is nicknamed the old man’s teeth because of its physical appearance on its top peaks like the worn-out teeth of an old man. Mount Sabyinyo derives its name from this as well because the name “sabyinyo” in the local Kinyarwanda language means teeth. Mount Sabyinyo attracts nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts for a hiking adventure to the top peaks. This is because the terrain of Mount Sabyinyo is not very steep hence can be trekked easily from Mgahinga Gorilla National Park of Uganda. Mount Sabyinyo hosts the endangered wild mountain gorillas on its slopes making it an iconic site for a gorilla safari adventure experience.
Gahinga Volcano
Mount Gahinga or Gahinga Volcano is the smallest volcano mountain in the Virunga mountain ranges standing at an altitude of approximately 3,473 m above sea level. The word “Gahinga” is a Kinyarwanda word meaning stones or rocks. The Mufumbiro mountain range which is part of the Virunga mountains stretches from Congo through Uganda to Rwanda.
Mount Gahinga is located between Mount Sabyinyo and Mount Muhabura on the border of Rwanda and Uganda. The volcano has a caldera on top at its peak that stretches for over 180 meters with a swamp and various flora surrounding the walls of the caldera. The Gahinga Volcano is located in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in the side of Uganda and another part of Mount Gahinga is in Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda was named after this mystical Gahinga volcano.
The volcano has an afro-montane type of vegetation which is a perfect vegetation type for the endangered wild mountain gorillas as well as other wildlife species like bush elephants, giant bush hogs, and wild pigs to mention but a few. The bamboo trees on the slopes and base of the Gahinga volcano are also a natural habitat for the rare golden monkeys. Visitors on a gorilla trekking safari in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park can take a hike to the top of Mount Gahinga to observe the beautiful flora and lots of bird species.
Mount Muhabura
With an elevation of about 4,127 meters above sea level, Mount Muhabura is the third-highest volcano in the Virunga mountains. Mount Muhabura or Muhavura as the Rwandans call it got its name from the Kinyarwanda and Rufumbira word “Muhabura” which means “guide”. Mount Muhabura is an inactive or dormant volcano with a small crate lake on its top. Crates are formed after a volcanic eruption has taken place and the vent where magma was passing is left open. With time rainfall pours and fills the crate with water hence forming a crate lake.
Mount Bisoke
Among the Virunga mountain ranges, Mount Bisoke is an active volcano with an elevation of approximately 12, 175 meters above sea level. The latest recorded statistics of Mount Bisoke show that it last erupted in 1957. Mount Bisoke lies on the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. However, the highest peak of this volcano is located on the side of Rwanda in the Volcanoes National Park. Bisoke volcano has two crater lakes one on its peak and the largest crate lake is found on its side.
This crater lake was not formed until the last volcanic eruption of Mount Bisoke. It is an important tourist site for Rwanda in the Volcanoes National Park as it hosts the endangered wild mountain gorillas. It has an equatorial type of vegetation with lots of bamboo that makes up a significant part of the mountain gorillas’ diet. The slippery rocky terrain of Mount Bisoke especially at the top slopes poses a challenge to the hiking die-hards and nature lovers who still manage to maneuver it through to the peak.
Mount Karisimbi
Karisimbi volcano is the highest mountain in the Virunga mountain ranges. It is the highest point in Rwanda as well. It is located on the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. Mount Karisimbi derives its name from the Kinyarwanda word “amasimbi” which means “snow”.
Although Mount Karisimbi is not usually snow-capped all year round, snow is usually present in the dry months of June, July, and August. The mountain is very important to Rwanda as it harbors the endangered mountain gorillas and also its valley homes several wildlife species like bush elephants, antelopes, giant forest hogs, and other primates including the rare golden monkeys, and olive baboons among others. This valley also hosts the Karisoke Research Center of the late Dian Fossey a mountain gorilla conservationist.
Mount Mikeno
When it comes to height, Mount Mikeno takes second place among the Virunga mountain ranges behind Mount Karisimbi. With its elevation of over 4,437 meters above sea level, Mikeno volcano ranges 13th on the continent of Africa regarding height. Mount Mikeno is located in the Democratic Republic of Congo hosting the endangered mountain gorillas. Mikeno is a local Congolese word meaning “poor”. Mount Mikeno was named so because of its rocky harsh slippery terrain that has made it close to impossible for humans to inhabit or hike.
Mount Nyiragongo
Mount Nyiragongo is the most active volcano in the world with its last eruption recorded in 2021. It is located in the Democratic Republic of Congo near the town of Goma. It has an elevation of about 3,470 meters above sea level. Mount Nyiragongo is found north of Lake Kivu and west of Rwanda. Because of the several eruptions of Mount Nyiragongo that have taken place in the recent past, there are no major wildlife species recorded along its slopes, unlike the other mountains in the Virunga mountain ranges.
Mount Nyamuragira
Mount Nyamuragira is an active volcano in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The mountain derived its name from the local Kinyarwanda word “kuragira nyamu” which means a herd of animals. It has a maximum height of about 3,055 meters above sea level and is the most active volcano in Africa having erupted more than 40 times since 1885 with its last eruption happening in 2011. Mount Nyamuragira has a 2-kilometer caldera that stretches its peak with its walls elevating to 500 meters high.
